NY Times – Scientific evidence of the practical benefits of meditation has been increasing its awareness and popularity as a practicing tool to improve one’s mind. Meditation is now widely known to enhance creativity, memory, and scores on standardized intelligence tests. But does meditation fulfill its originally intended effect — the reduction of suffering? Results are striking: even relatively brief training in meditative techniques can alter neural functioning in brain areas associated with empathic understanding of others’ distress, in other words, greater compassion response.
